Im Frühling des Jahres 1799 machte sich James Atkinson, ein geschäftstüchtiger junger Mann aus der ländlichen Wildnis Cumberlands, mit der Kutsche auf ins glorreiche London. In seiner Westentasche Rezepturen für feine Düfte und Toilettenartikel, die er selbst erfunden hatte. Bei sich ein ansehnlicher Vorrat an Bärenfettbalsam, das mit Rosenduft parfümiert war. Und neben dem Balsam ein leibhaftiger, vor sich hin brummender Bär.
Der Brummbär, der James voll und ganz ergeben war, erwies sich als Glücksbringer und künftiges Markenzeichen. Binnen weniger Tage begeisterte sich Londons High Society so sehr für das außergewöhnliche Balsam, dass sich lange Schlangen an der 44 Gerrard Street bildeten, um sich bei „Meister Petz“ für die kommende gesellschaftliche Saison ausreichend einzudecken.
